History

Putting the globe on a basketball was an idea that came after the GMU men's basketball team reached the final four of the 2006 NCAA championships. Around the same time, the Roper report commissioned by the National Geographic Society, documented geographic illiteracy among young people in the United States. Allan Falconer, Chair of the GMU Geography Department (left) and the coach of the GMU men’s basketball team, Jim Larranaga (right) realized it was a perfect opportunity work together to promote geography education.
